President,
Beverly Allen, called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. at the Cypress Creek Lakes
Community Center.
Past
recipient, Noelle Rowe was announced as December’s Yard of the Month winner.
Those in
attendance included: Ann Wiseman, Billie Fontana, Kathie Corbett, Sandra
Gilbert, Jennifer Buchert, Mike Owens, Helen Lombardo, Debbie Haluch, Bonnie
Segura, Norma Chiaramonte, Larry and Bev Allen, Patti Foucha, Cathy Oland,
Susan Sternitzky and John Marenco.
A motion
was made and seconded to dispense of the reading of the minutes.
Treasurer’s
report: The
garden club donated $210.00 to Star of Hope Mission’s holiday toy drive.
Business:
Bev discussed various garden club initiatives and asked for ideas for upcoming
seasonal tours. Suggestions included a daylily grower’s garden and Peckerwood
Garden.
The
butterfly garden has been planted and QR codes have been placed to identify
plants. The brick fundraiser was mentioned, and it was agreed that the club
will participate in this fundraiser once again. Helen gathered names of members
who wished to help in the planning of the Mother’s Day Junior Gardener event.
She will communicate a meeting date. The actual event will take place May 3,
2014.
Speaker
and master gardener, Billie Fontana, delivered a hands-on presentation for container
gardening. She demonstrated how to create a container that features “a
thriller, a filler, and a spiller” using rosemary, red tilt lettuce and
strawberries.

Door
prizes: Thank you to our speaker who donated two beautifully planted containers.
Gardening
tip of the month: “Plant trees! (Unless it is really cold) The third Friday in
January is often used as a regional Arbor Day. It is okay to plant trees that
are containerized in the winter months along the Gulf Coast.” Randy Lemmon, 1001 Garden Line Questions with Randy Lemmon.
The next
meeting will be Monday, February 10, 2013.
