August, 2021 – Meeting Minutes

The August meeting was a special called dinner meeting to elect new officers and discuss the future of the Garden Club.

 Attendees: Larry and Beverly Allen, Norma and Ed Chiaramonte, Debbie Haluch, Ellen and Mark Jones, Cathy Oland, Mike Owen, Alma Rielly, Louise Rugaard, Ann and Ken Sansbury, Dale Smothers, Irma Uyeda, Tracy Walker, Ruth Westra.

 Minutes –  May Meeting Minutes –we dispensed with reading of the minutes.

 Treasurer’s Report - Treasurer Report was given by Secretary/Treasurer, Ann Sansbury and approved    by all.

 Business:

 We elected new officers for 2021-2023:

Copresidents – Ruth Westra/Irma Uyeda

Treasurer – Tracy Walker

Dedication Ceremony for Butterfly Signs

 Planting of Butterfly Signs with Garden Names

Mark and Dale dug a 2 foot hole for the butterfly base to be cemented in.

They had to cut tree roots along the way.  Not an easy task in any weather.  It was 83 degrees.

This looks like a peaceful and tranquil setting.

However, there was a crew close by cutting limbs off the large oak trees.

There were many volunteers to thank for making the butterfly name dedication happen.

Mark and Dale with project completed.  

Liz is the artist painter for both butterflies.

After an hour of getting supplies and sign to the garden, the heavy work began.

Ann was there for support.

Dale was checking the hole size.  This is a young garden with clay base that proved to be a shoulder work out for Dale and Mark.

Spikes were attached to base for added stability.

Whew...it took a long time to get deep enough!

Ready to be cemented in place.

Yeah! A job super well done.  Thank you Mark and Dale for "shouldering" through this task!

May General Meeting In Person

 Finally we are able to meet in person.

Jr Gardener Event - Butterfly Gardens Renamed

 The garden club came together with an outdoor event and light rain.

Signs were planted with the 20 names submitted for Garden A.

Garden B signs were hung up.

Great day to play on the wall and newly replaced sawdust playground

Bonnie and Tracy handled the seed planting strip making area.  Super windy!

Refreshments were served

Families took plants donated by garden club members

Ruth donated plants to sell.  Thank you to Jeff, Gwen, Norma C., Norma I, Cathy, Dale, Mark, Ellen, Bonnie, Louise, Tracy, Ian and Debbie.

Round Top Collection donated 2 large butterfly signs for the new garden names. Liz will be painting.

Cathy and Carl are celebrating 50+ years of marriage. 

The gathering sight was also a chance to view the memorial bricks in garden pathway.

Social media postings encouraged others to come and take plants after the event was done.

April General Meeting

 The April meeting was by Zoom.

 Attendees: Bonnie Buhl, Norma Chiaramonte, Debbie Haluch, Bea Huriega, Ellen and Mark Jones, Jeff and Gwen Klorer, Alma Rielly, Ann Sansbury, Dale Smothers, Michelle Sobczak (visitor), Tracy Walker and Ruth Westra.

 Speaker: Marty and Greg Graves with the Lone Star Hibiscus Club spoke on everything hibiscus including many varieties, propagation and growing beautiful hibiscus.

 Old Business:

·       Bonnie spoke on the naming of the butterfly gardens and went over the rules. The winner will be announced May 1 at 11:00 at the Plant Giveaway and Sale.

·       The Plant Giveaway and Sale will be on May 1 from 10:00 until noon.

 New Business:

·       Debbie announced that we need someone to step up and take the Presidents and Secretary/Treasurer offices for the next two years. She will plan the programs.

·       Planting of the gardens will be April 24^th at 9:00. Kyle will deliver the plants to the clubhouse the day before.

·       We would like to have a Yard of the Season winner for Spring before the next meeting.

·       Debbie shared pictures of members’ plants that survived the freeze.

·       The May 10 meeting will be in person at the Community Center.

 Tips:

• ·       Books and newspaper are great for combating weeds.
• ·       Now is a great time to plant vegetables.
