September General Meeting

President, Norma Chiaramonte, called the meeting to order 
at 7 p.m. at the Cypress Creek Lakes Community Center.

THOSE IN ATTENDANCE INCLUDED: Bev and Larry 
Allen, Jennifer Buchert, Norma Chiaramonte, Kathie Corbett, Sandra Gilbert, Debbie Haluch, David and Marcia Mausolf, Gigi and John Marenco and their daughters, Mike Owens, Ann Wiseman Schmidt. Our guests were Kathi Palacious and Elizabeth Hearn.

 

SPEAKER: Ann Wiseman Schmidt invited Luis Chamorro with The Ground Up to speak on Fertilizers and Mulch.

MINUTES:  A motion was made to dispense with the reading of the minutes.

Congratulations:  Yard of the Month winners are the 
Guzman Family.

OLD BUSINESS:  Sandra will place an order for bricks this fall. She will do this quarterly.

Larry reported that we have 9 signs placed and will need more signs for new entrances which will be open later in the year.

Larry also reported that he will talk to Kyle about when 
to plant the Butterfly Garden. He will send email letting the members know the date.

Bev needs help with the Yard of the Month selection, and will ask Ellen Jones if she can help.

NEW BUSINESS: Norma asked everyone who is in charge of finding a speaker   to let her know, by email, the speaker’s name, who 
they are with and the theme, as soon as possible.

Norma asked if we will continue the Youth Event. 
It will be dropped, as we do not have a school contact.

Marcia brought a flyer for the Brookwood Holiday Lunch 
and Decorating event, to be held October 15 and 16. It will 
cost $ 21.95 and she will reserve a table if we get a group together. 
She will send an email to members for more information.

Norma asked for ideas for Service Projects we can do for the community. Mike suggested that we collect food for the food bank at Christmas. Norma will check with the food bank to see what they are lacking.

Mike announced that the HOA will sponsor a Meet Our Policemen event on October 18. 
Information will be on the CCL website.

Mike also said that the price of water will be going up.

 

John announced that the Master Gardener Plant sale will be September 20 from 9-1 at the Bear Creek Park, 3033 Bear Creek Dr., Houston 77084.

DOOR PRIZE: Thank you to Sandra for bringing the spider plant (won by Kathi Palacious).  Luis also brought numerous items from The Ground Up. Everyone attending took home a door prize.

HOSTESS:  Thank you to Bev and Larry for being hostess this month!

GARDENING TIP OF THE MONTH:  ­­­­­­­­­­­­Many nurseries and garden centers start having clearance sales. Many sales boast prices up to 75% off. It’s a good time to stock up on bargain plants, considering that October is reputed to be the best month to plant things.

Beautiful Planting Weather Morning

Cypress Creek Lakes garden club members Bev Allen, Larry Allen, Sandra Gilbert, Mike Owens, Ellen Jones, Mark Jones, Jennifer Buchert, Cathy Oland, Debbie Haluch and the Marenco family gathered early morning to replant our subdivision’s butterfly garden.


We planted 108 White Angelonia, 90 Purple Angelonia, 90 White Vincas and 90 Red Pentas plus 10 bags of mulch to make the garden look stunning.

Special thanks to Kyle Franklin and the IMS group who had removed the old plants, turned the soil and finish the prep work prior to our planting.  Helen did a fabulous plant layout design.  Larry coordinated the entire project and supplied food and drinks.

Jr Gardener's Event

Neighborhood Children and Youth gathered at the Community Center to decorate pots and plant herbs for Mother's Day presents.  Here are a few pictures.

April General Meeting

Bev Allen opened the meeting at 7pm with Debbie Haluch, Cathy Oland, Karl Oland, Larry Allen, Sandra Gilbert, Norma Chiramonte, Kathy Corbin, Dale Smothers, Marcia Mausolf, Dave Mausolf, Mike Owens and the Marenco family.

 

 

 

Patricia Bradberry, Master Gardener, presented herb growing to club members.  She explained medical values plus growing tips.  Patricia brought drinks, dips and jellies made from her herb garden.

Motion passed to dispense reading of minute meetings.

Sandra has one order for engraved brick.

Butterfly Garden planting will take place Saturday, May 16^th starting at 8am.  Helen Lombardo will layout gardening plans and coordinate plants with Kyle Franklin.  Larry Allen will coordinate with Helen and Kyle to get the plants dug up and soil turned.

Norma is heading up the Jr Gardener event for May 2^nd.  There are 20 kids signed up to participate in making plant pots for Mother’s Day.  This event will be held at Community Center from 10am – 2pm.

CCL Board has presented a cash donation which will be used to purchase items for Jr. Gardener Mother’s Day event.

Kathie Corbett has volunteered to be Secretary/ Treasurer for CCLGC’s Sept 2015- May 2016 member meetings.

Thank you Sandra for the delicious treats.

March Club Meeting

President, Beverly Allen, called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. at the Cypress Creek Lakes Community Center.

It was announced that Yard of the Month will resume next month.

Those in attendance included: Bev Allen, Larry Allen, Jennifer Buchert, Debbie Haluch, Marcia Mausolf, Dave Mausolf, Bonnie Segura, Kathie Corbett and Ann Wiseman.

A motion was made and seconded to dispense of the reading of the minutes.

Business: Bev discussed various garden club initiatives including the Butterfly Garden. Larry will be in contact with Kyle Franklin to determine what will be planted. The club also discussed making an effort to plant milkweed for monarch caterpillars. Planting will take place in May.

 

CCLGC needs volunteers to sign up for the community Easter egg hunt table.  The event is held at newer Community Center below Tuckerton – here we will also have registration for the Junior Gardener event. Several members are planning to attend the Bluebonnet Garden Club’s “Art in Blossom” event in Brenham, Texas on April 9. Individuals must purchase their own tickets.

Mark Klym from Texas Parks and Wildlife presented a workshop on attracting and keeping hummingbirds and butterflies in our gardens. Texas has 18 hummingbird species. He is a co-author of the book, Hummingbirds of Texas, published by Texas A&M University Press.

Gardening tip of the month: “Feed azaleas and camellias once they are finished blooming. Hen feed again in six weeks. If lacebugs are a problem, feed with systemic azalea foods.” Randy Lemmon, 1001 Garden Line Questions with Randy Lemmon.

Club tour- The Ground Up

Garden members car pooled on a cold and windy Saturday morning to see The Ground Up composting operations.  They have three operational sites and the club choose the Richmond location at the invitation of Assistant Manager, Paul Wilkinson.

Luis, operations manager, gave us an excellent educational discussion about their process and highlighted differences between Ground Up and competitors.  He will be our speaker in September.

The Ground Up is led by a dynamic, organic-minded team dedicated to teaching communities how to build more healthy, beautiful, sustainable lawns, gardens & landscapes.  They strictly follow the procedures of the Soil Foodweb to create the highest quality and best performing mulch, soils & vegan compost in today’s market.

 

This methodology, pioneered by world-renowned soil scientist, Dr. Elaine Ingham, focuses on creating soils which are organic, biologically rich & highly effective.    

 

They have strict procedures for landscapers who are delivering wood to be composed.  We watched as huge compost piles were redistributed.  It was easy to see the heat rising of fresh compost.  The air was filled with a sweet tobacco smell.

 

The tour lasted just over an hour.

 

 

February Club Meeting

President, Beverly Allen, called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. at the Cypress Creek Lakes Community Center.

Yard of the Month was awarded to the Tere Rodriguez family of 26110 Castlemoor St.

Those in attendance included: Sandra Gilbert, Billie Fontana, Beverly Allen, Larry Allen, Marcia Mausolf, Dave Mausolf, Ann Wiseman, Jennifer Buchert, Debbie Haluch, Patti Foucha, Kathie Corbett, Mike Owens, Norma Chiaramonte and Cathy Oland.

A motion was made and seconded to dispense of the reading of the minutes.

Business: Bev discussed various garden club initiatives including the need for a new Butterfly Garden volunteer to help manage and plan seasonal planting of the garden. Larry has volunteered to organize planting of the Butterfly Garden. Norma will head up the Junior Gardener event scheduled for May 2. A planning meeting will be arranged to discuss this year’s project and logistics. A gift card will be donated by CCLGC for the District IV silent auction.

Kyle Franklin from IMS Landscaping presented tips for smart watering and planting. He brought several examples of water-wise plants and provided this month’s door prizes.
